ADOLESCENTS

You are eligible to participate if you fall into one of the following 2 categories:

You do not smoke or use vaping products* 

  • Less than 100 lifetime cigarettes

  • Never used vaping products

You only use vaping products*

  • Less than 100 lifetime cigarettes

  • Now using vaping products every day or some days

*Vaping Products = vapes, vape pens, e-cigarettes, vaporizers.
This includes vaping any substances (nicotine, cannabis, CBD, or other types).

Who should not 
participate in the study?

You will not be eligible to participate in this study if:

  • You have smoked cannabis (for example, joints, pipes, bowls, bong, spliff, blunt, dab) within the past month and/or have a cannabis smoking history of greater than one joint per day for one year

  • You have smoke cigarettes within the past 6 months

  • You have reasons why you can't do lung function tests (such as having surgery on your chest or belly recently, having aneurysms, or unstable heart conditions)

  • You have reasons why you can't undergo an MRI (such as having metallic body implants, recent tattoos, or others)

  • You have a history of claustrophobia (fear of small spaces)

  • You are pregnant or breast feeding

  • You are currently undergoing treatment for lung cancer

  • You have been diagnosed with a chronic lung disease (for example, cystic fibrosis, asthma, primary ciliary dyskinesia, or bronchopulmonary dysplasia)

To participate in this study, we anticipate that you will need to allocate about 10 hours of time. 

You will be financially compensated for your time at $30 per hour.

Visit 1
(Baseline)

Visit 1 involves the following procedures and is expected to take approximately 3-4 hours:
 

  • Questionnaires

  • Pulmonary Function Tests

  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test

  • Induced Sputum Sample Collection

  • Blood Sample Collection

  • Pulmonary MRI (only available at certain sites)

Visit 2
(18 Months Later)

Visit 2 involves the following procedures and is expected to take approximately 2-2.5 hours:
 

  • Questionnaires

  • Pulmonary Function Tests

Visit 3
(36 Months Later)

Visit 3 involves the following procedures and is expected to take approximately 3-4 hours:

  • Questionnaires

  • Pulmonary Function Tests

  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test

  • Induced Sputum Sample Collection

  • Blood Sample Collection

  • Pulmonary MRI (only available at certain sites)

Lung Symptom Survey (Every 3 Months)

You will be contacted every 3 months following Visit 1 by email or phone to answer 4 questions about your respiratory symptoms (approximately 5 minutes).
