About the CLOUD Study

Vaping is increasingly popular among Canadians, but the long-term health impacts remain unknown. This study will advance our knowledge of whether vaping can be considered safe.

Study Overview

CLOUD is using new technologies to study the pulmonary effects of vaping, including novel lung function tests, lung imaging procedures, and exercise testing.

Our Research Team

CLOUD is a collaborative multi-center study, with information being collected in cities across the country. Our research team is highly specialized in fields such as respirology, lung imaging, exercise physiology, and molecular biology.

Who We Are

The Canadian Lung Outcomes in Users of Vaping Devices (CLOUD) Study is a longitudinal study that will be following 500 adult and adolescent participants in Canada. CLOUD aims to enhance our current understanding of the effects of vaping on the lungs, to give Canadians who vape important information on the consequences of using vaping products.

500 Participants

We will be enrolling 400 adult participants (aged 19 years or older) and 100 adolescent participants (aged 12 to 18) and following these individuals for 3 years total.

6 Academic Sites

Our study encompasses 6 academic hospital centers across Canada: University of British Columbia, University of Alberta, McMaster University, University of Toronto, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and Université de Sherbrooke

Expert Research Team

Our team of experts includes an academic team, persons with lived experience, adolescent advisors, public health advocates, Indigenous representative, and industry partners.
